SOUTH AFRICA: African Odyssey Inaugrated In Cape Town

Hosted by acclaimed American celebrity stylist and entrepreneur, June Ambrose, the event is targeted at fashion forward females seeking inspiration and empowerment in the spheres of fashion, beauty and business.

AFRICAN ODYSSEY, the brainchild of businesswoman, Carol Bouwer, will consisted of a one-day summit, that highlights the heritage and diverse fashion cultures of our country.

The forum aims to encourage women who are passionate about the industry and eager to grow professionally, through the shared wisdom and experiences of the dynamic business leaders, celebrities and media sensations.

The attendees will have the opportunity of participating in the interactive panel discussion with prominent SA business women, “Style File” workshops curated by Ambrose and networking opportunities.

The highlight of the summit will be June’s inspirational journey and what ultimately led her to visit South Africa. Starting in the Bronx, June had a brief stint in investment banking before having the courage to follow her dreams, becoming the international style icon she is today.

Comments Bouwer, Through social media and one-on-one interactions with young South African women, I am often asked how I parlayed my initial success in TV into a business.

The idea has been simmering for a while and after a meeting of the minds with June late last year I decided to create an event - a ‘movement’ where women can engage and learn from those who have done it before. I am excited to see this platform take shape.

The African Odyssey was brought to life by our outstanding partnerships which include UN Women, EDCON’s Orange Initiative, UNICEF, Destiny magazine and The City of Cape Town.

EDCON’s Orange Initiative’s ultimate objective is to empower women through skills development that helps them acquire sewing skills, improves their knowledge and understanding of fashion, trends and design.

Their annual campaign calls on citizens around the world to unite in the fight to end violence and abuse against women and girls.

“I am a firm believer that if it doesn’t hurt a little, it's not change. You have to go beyond where you're comfortable, or you're not progressing. I look forward to sharing my personal story, my challenges, the things that have helped me grow and I hope some of the hard lessons I have learnt will inspire young women.

You can look forward to a day where I showcase all the tools in my style toolbox for an inspirational day of networking, style talks and hard-hitting discussion which gets to the crux of what makes a successful business woman in the demanding and highly competitive world of fashion”, shares Ambrose.

Panelists will include highly acclaimed business leaders like SA Fashion Council’s Anita Stanbury and founder of Ndalo Media Khanyi Dhlomo, who will empart their personal triumphs and experiences with 300+ new generation South African women.

A “Style Icon” gala dinner and fashion show will be hosted by Ambrose on the evening of June 16th. Guests are invited to don their best ‘Met-gala’ inspired gowns for the luxury affair at Cape Town’s iconic City Hall.
