KENYA: Watchman Killed In Kisumu Church Robbery

Two suspects have been arrested in connection to a robbery at a Kisumu church during which a watchman was killed.

George Otieno, 47, was slashed several times on the head and neck while trying to prevent the crime at Nanga Catholic Church last Saturday.

Otieno had children and had been guarding the church since 2008.

He was overpowered by the robbers who then broke into Father George Kraakman’s house.

Kraakman said the attackers gained access to the compound by cutting a fence.

He said he heard noises when he went to the kitchen and found the door open and his fridge missing.

The Father said he called out for the guard but did not hear a response. He said he found him lying in a pool of blood with deep cuts to his head and neck.

Witnesses said Otieno died while being rushed to Kisumu County Hospital.

County commissioner Mohamed Maalim said on Tuesday that the robbers stole several items from the church but that they were recovered in Nyalenda area in Kisumu Central, near Kowino Market.

Maalim said they found two fridges, one similar to the one stolen from Kraakman's house, and other electronics.

“The suspects are assisting police with investigations," he said.

A mob lynched a man who was allegedly part of the team that stole from the Father.

The man was also accused of stealing a phone.
